Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Fluepapiret is a small urban sandy beach covering approximately 6,500 m² with a 200 m shoreline and a triangular shape. The beach features a seagrass belt, an instructional reef with snorkeling trail established in 2017, and a bathing bridge. The seabed consists of sand with numerous large and small stones, scattered seaweed growths, and mussels. Water depth increases rapidly, reaching 0.5 m at approximately 4.5 m from shore and 1 m at approximately 8 m from shore.

Water

Marine water body in Sønderborg Bay. Brackish water with salinity of 14–24 ‰. Current direction is primarily westerly or easterly, following the coast when water flows in and out of Alssund, or moving directly to and from the coast. The beach is part of Natura 2000 area no. 197 Flensborg Fjord, Bredgrund and surrounding waters of Als.

Location

Fluepapiret is located in Sønderborg, Denmark, accessible from Strandvej and the beach promenade that runs from Sønderborg Castle to the yacht harbour. A hotel and Sønderborg town centre are situated behind the beach. Parking area, benches, toilet, and kiosk are available.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Monitoring occurs from 1 June to 15 September, with samples analysed for E. coli and intestinal enterococci to detect faecal pollution. Analysis results from the last four years show no exceedances of limit values for faecal bacteria. The greatest risk for faecal bacteria is from rain-related overflow during heavy precipitation or from incorrect connections; such pollution is typically short-lived and maximum duration is 3 days after heavy rainfall due to rapid dilution and transport by currents.

Risks

Very low risk of cyanobacteria blooms; no blue-green algae observed on this beach. No previous phytoplankton blooms observed during the bathing season. Small risk of seaweed wash-up; swimming is generally discouraged during large quantities of seaweed due to potential toxin formation in decaying seaweed and bacterial survival within it.
