Augustenborg Fjord at Madeskoven is a sandy beach approximately 3–4 metres wide and 120 metres long. The beach has relatively shallow water, with depths of 0.5 metres occurring about 8 metres from shore and 1 metre depth at about 28 metres offshore, making it suitable for children. The seabed consists of sand with some large stones and numerous mussel shells. Red algae and bladder wrack may wash ashore.

Water

Marine brackish water with salinity of 16–24 ‰. The dominant current directions are westerly, southwesterly, or easterly, with occasional northerly currents. Current patterns show the water typically moves along the coast in both directions, sometimes flowing directly away from the shore. Current data from 2006–2019 show the current direction is determined by water movements within Augustenborg Fjord.

Location

The beach is located at Augustenborg Fjord near Madeskov Camping and Madeskoven forest in Sønderborg municipality. Access is via a forest path to the right of the car park beside the camping site. The address is Madeskov 9, 6400 Sønderborg. Parking is available at the camping site car park.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Good. Monitoring occurs from 1 June to 15 September. Samples are analysed for E. coli and intestinal enterococci as faecal pollution indicators. In the past four years, there was a single exceedance of bacterial limit values; the pollution was brief. Vadebæk creek discharges southwest of the beach approximately 800 metres away. A private rainwater pipe or ditch is located north of Vadebæk approximately 600 metres from the beach. Previous cross-connections in the Dyrehaven, Sundsmark area (lasting 40 years) have been corrected.

Risks

Risk of faecal contamination from overflow structures or cross-connections via Vadebæk creek, though this typically requires northeasterly currents, which are rare. During heavy rainfall, there may be a brief delay before contamination becomes visible, but pollution is usually short-lived, typically lasting a maximum of 3 days due to current dispersal. Risk of cyanobacterial blooms is very small; none have been observed at this beach. Risk of phytoplankton blooms during bathing season is small. There is high risk of macroalgal wrash-up; large quantities of algae or decomposing seaweed can harbour disease-causing bacteria and produce toxins. Gulls and resting waterfowl are present. Small boats at anchor are observed offshore, with fishing activities occurring from these boats.
