Sønderborg Sundgade - Toøren is a bathing beach approximately 350 metres long located on the western side of Als Sund in Denmark. The beach features a 10–20 metre wide sandy shore with scattered marram grass vegetation at the northern end and a bathing pier. The seabed consists of sand with scattered seaweed growth and stones, deepening quickly—reaching 0.5 metres depth at approximately 4 metres from shore and 1 metre depth at approximately 8 metres from shore. The water is brackish with a salinity of 14–24 ‰.

Marine brackish water body (Als Sund) with salinity 14–24 ‰. The bathing area extends approximately 350 metres. Water depth reaches 0.5 metres at approximately 4 metres from shore and 1 metre at approximately 8 metres from shore. Current direction is predominantly southward and southwestward, determined by water movements in Sønderborg Bay.

Location

The beach is located on the western side of Als Sund near Sønderborg, Denmark. Access is available from a car park on Sundgade and on foot via Gendarmstien, a coastal path leading towards Germany. A small playground is adjacent to the car park. Parking is available on Sundgade.

Facilities

Bathing pier, rescue ring, waste bins, toilet access on the way to the beach, lifeguard station (redningskrans).

Season

1 June to 15 September.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as excellent based on data from the last four years. Water samples are analysed for E. coli and intestinal enterococci during the monitoring period 1 June to 15 September. Analysis results from the last 4 years show no exceedances of limit values for faecal bacteria. Potential pollution sources include overflow structures from separate sewage systems north of the bathing area, overflows from combined sewage systems on the opposite side of Als Sund, and surface water runoff from fields in the southwestern part of the bathing area.

Risks

Small risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up; bathing is generally discouraged during large quantities of seaweed in the shoreline due to potential toxin production in decomposing seaweed and survival of disease-causing bacteria. Very low risk of cyanobacteria blooms; none have been observed at this beach. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms during the bathing season. Potential for short-term faecal bacteria pollution from misconnections and stormwater overflows during heavy rainfall, typically lasting a maximum of 3 days.
