Sønderborg Badestrand

Sønderborg Badestrand is a Blue Flag beach located on Sønderborg Bay, extending approximately 1.3 km along the coastline. The sandy beach is 10–15 m wide with a bathing platform and may contain a belt of stones at the water's edge. The seabed consists of sand with stones and scattered seaweed. Water depth reaches 0.5 m at approximately 5 m from shore and 1 m at approximately 8.5 m from shore. The beach is bordered to the west by Sønderborg Yacht Harbour and to the east by Sønderskoven forest.

Water

Marine bathing water in Sønderborg Bay. Brackish water with salinity of 16–24 ‰. Dominant current directions are westerly, south-westerly, south-easterly, or northerly. Current flow is driven by water movements in Sønderborg Bay with inflows and outflows from Als Sound and Flensborg Fjord.

Location

Sønderborg, Denmark. Parking is available at the end of Friheds Allé with beach access via a path. Access is also available from Hiort Lorenzens Vej trail system and from Sønderborg Yacht Harbour.

Facilities

Toilets, rescue ring, waste bins. A staffed Blue Flag station operates at the yacht harbour approximately 300 m from the beach during summer.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Monitoring occurs from 1 June to 15 September. Laboratory analysis tests for E. coli and intestinal enterococci as faecal contamination indicators. Analysis results over the last four years show no exceedances of bacterial limit values. Primary risk of faecal bacteria is from rain-driven overflow during heavy precipitation and from misconnections; contamination is typically brief due to rapid current transport.

Risks

Very low risk of cyanobacteria blooms; none have been observed. Low risk of plant plankton blooms during bathing season. Small risk of seaweed accumulation at the shoreline; large quantities of seaweed can harbour toxin-producing bacteria and pathogens. Large quantities of algae warrant avoidance of bathing.
