Diga Vecchia Sud is a bathing area located on the outer side of a breakwater in Trieste, equipped with a bathing establishment. The area consists of a concrete quay with breakwater structures. It is classified as coastal marine water and has been monitored since 2011, with regular reviews conducted through 2019.

Coastal marine water body covering an area of 0.579 km². The water body is designated as Trieste - Diga Vecchia and extends from coordinates 45.659782°N; 13.759891°E to 45.655229°N; 13.762218°E.

Location

Trieste, Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Italy. The bathing area is situated along the Diga Vecchia (Old Breakwater) adjacent to the Porto Franco Vecchio area. Coordinates: 45.657419°N, 13.760318°E.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as GOOD (reference years 2015–2018). Escherichia Coli at 90th percentile: 262 CFU/100 ml; at 95th percentile: 479 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal Enterococci at 90th percentile: 46 CFU/100 ml; at 95th percentile: 77 CFU/100 ml. Quality improved from Excellent to Good between the 2014–2017 and 2015–2018 bathing seasons. Wastewater treatment is provided by the Servola treatment plant via submarine outfall. Occasional microbiological pollution events are linked to proximity to the port area and the Settefontane stream (T. Chiave).

Risks

Occasional short-duration microbiological contamination events occur following intense precipitation, triggered by activation of the Settefontane stream flow and possible overflow of sewer channels due to clogging. In 2016, contamination occurred in June and September. In 2018, contamination events were recorded in April (short-duration), May, and September, with drainage problems detected in the upper-zone sewer collector of the Servola treatment plant. No cyanobacterial eutrophication phenomena or toxic algal blooms have been reported.
