Lenios is a sandy beach located in the northeastern Gulf of Larnaca, Cyprus. The beach is 240 metres long with an average water depth of 1 metre and maximum depth of 2 metres. It features scattered pebbles in an artificial harbour setting and is bordered by breakwaters 150 metres offshore. The beach is easily accessible via an asphalt road that runs along the shoreline. The coastal area has been classified as having an exceptional water quality status based on long-term monitoring data.

Water

Northeastern Gulf of Larnaca. The beach is 240 metres long. Average water depth is 1 metre; maximum water depth is 2 metres. The coastal zone features sandy bottom composition with scattered pebbles. Semi-natural coastal zone with breakwaters positioned parallel to the shoreline at 150 metres distance. The water body belongs to the major hydrological basin 8, with mean basin elevation of 259.1 metres and mean annual surface rainfall of 415.8 millimetres. Mean annual runoff is highest in February and lowest in August (120-0 litres per second respectively).

Location

Located in the Larnaca District, administered by the Boroklini Community. The beach is accessed via an asphalt road that connects to the primary and secondary road network of the region. Larnaca Port is approximately 4.5 kilometres to the southwest.

Facilities

No public facilities are available for visitors. No waste collection bins are present on the beach. The Boroklini Community is responsible for waste collection. Maximum daily number of swimmers is 200. No water sports activities occur at this location.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as exceptional based on monitoring data. The water body is in good ecological condition. Monitoring has been conducted for many years, with formal monitoring reports prepared since Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004.

Risks

Low risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development due to identified pollution sources. Possible short-term pollution sources include rainwater runoff, which may occur once during the bathing season with a duration of 1-2 days. No incidents of short-term pollution were recorded during the 2008-2010 bathing seasons. Potential pollution sources on land include agricultural runoff and infiltration from the entire influence zone, agro-livestock and industrial facilities within the zone, a landfill north of Boroklini, and septic tanks from residential and tourist developments upstream of the beach due to the absence of a sewage network. The stream discharging to the east of the beach may represent the most likely source of polluted runoff.
