Enstedværket Syd is a 200-metre-long sandy beach located on a reclaimed area on the southern side of Aabenraa Fjord, adjacent to the Enstedværket power plant's cooling water channel. The beach is approximately 15 metres wide with coastal defense structures and a designated grass area for leisure behind it. Water bottom conditions consist of sand, with depths reaching 5 metres approximately 40 metres from the shoreline, increasing sharply thereafter. The beach has been classified as excellent quality based on regular control samples taken between 2019 and 2022.

Water

Sandy beach 200 metres long and approximately 15 metres wide. Water depth reaches 5 metres approximately 40 metres from the shoreline and increases sharply. Sand forms the bottom substrate. Water currents flow in a northern to variable direction.

Location

Located on the southern side of Aabenraa Fjord near the Enstedværket power plant in Denmark. Parking is available on the southern side of the cooling water canal, with bridge and jetty access to the beach. The nearest residential area is Hostrupskov, a housing district with approximately 15 properties located immediately south of Enstedværket.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality. Classification is based on control samples taken regularly between 2019 and 2022. Samples taken at the monitoring station show excellent quality. Both the Grensbæk stream outlet and surrounding contributions to pollution are assessed as low.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms can occur, typically after rainfall followed by warm periods, with signs including discoloured water, foam formation, and potentially dead animals. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) can occur at the water's edge, with bathing not recommended in these areas due to toxin formation in decomposing seaweed and bacterial survival benefits. Temporary pollution may occur during heavy winds and rainfall, usually lasting a maximum of 3 days. Accidental pollution from pleasure boats, slurry tanks, and sewage pipes is possible. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills occasionally occur. Phytoplankton growth risk is assessed as very small.
