Sønderstrand Syd is a sandy beach approximately 130 metres long with variable width of about 25 metres, located at the bottom of Aabenraa Fjord in the southern part of Aabenraa town. The seabed is sand and water depth remains under 5 metres up to approximately 450 metres from the shoreline. A narrow grassed area lies between the beach and the main road behind it. The beach is classified as excellent quality for bathing water, based on monitoring from 2019 to 2022.

Sandy beach in a fjord. Beach length approximately 130 metres with variable width of about 25 metres. Water depth under 5 metres for up to approximately 450 metres from the shoreline. Current direction is typically northerly. Water level in the fjord can vary significantly, particularly during storms.

Location

Sønderstrand Syd is located in the southern part of Aabenraa town at the bottom of Aabenraa Fjord. There is no parking available directly at the beach; parking is available approximately 400 metres to the north. A warning sign is installed on the beach.

Season

1 June to 1 September.

Water Quality

Water classification: Excellent quality. Classification based on regular monitoring samples taken from 2019 to 2022. Samples taken at the measuring station show excellent quality. Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season. High pollution contributions assessed from two streams: Farversmølle Bæk (outlet immediately south of the area) and Skelbækken (outlet approximately 700 metres further south). Source tracing has been initiated. Possible sources include incorrect sewer connections, unknown discharges to watercourses, and sewer system overflows.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, typically occurring after rainfall periods with nutrient leaching followed by warm periods. Signs of blooms include unclear discoloured water, foam formation, and dead animals. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) can occur at the water's edge; bathing near large seaweed quantities is not recommended due to potential toxin production in decaying seaweed and bacteria protection from UV rays. During heavy rainfall and wind, sewer system overflows can occur with potential for water contamination lasting up to 3 days. Sudden contamination can result from accidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, and sewer lines. Glass fragments, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occasionally occur. Risk of phytoplankton growth assessed as low.
