Silvalde is a rural beach in Espinho municipality featuring an extensive sand strip and dune line bordered by two breakwaters. The beach is located in the Douro River basin and is monitored weekly for bathing water quality.

Season

June 14 to September 14, 2025. Sampling frequency is weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2024 bathing season. Potential microbiological pollution sources include fecal contamination from Silvalde stream (Ribeira de Silvalde) or malfunction of the pumping station located at Rua 45 near the stream. Short-term pollution (under 72 hours) is unlikely but may occur during precipitation events.

Risks

Short-term pollution may occur during precipitation due to microbiological load from tributary streams or pumping station breakdown. Cyanobacteria have moderate proliferation potential with a history of bloom occurrence. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no history of occurrence.
