Esrum Sø north of Fredensborg Harbour is a freshwater bathing area with excellent water quality. The water reaches 2 metres depth approximately 50 metres from the shore. The lake bottom is soft with scattered stones. Swimming conditions are characterized by weak currents and no risk of rip currents.

Location

Opposite Sørupvej 1-5, north of Fredensborg Harbour, Denmark. Beach number K490. Parking available at Slotsvænget. Access from Sørupvej near the sailing club. Bus 384 serves the area, stopping at Fredensborg Slot approximately 1.2 kilometres away.

Facilities

Bathing pier present. Kiosk at Sørupvej 1. No lifeguard. No disabled access facilities.

Season

Official monitoring period: 1 June to 31 August.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent based on data from 2013–2016. Ten water samples are collected throughout the bathing season from 1 June to 31 August. Excellent classification maintained consistently from 2013 through 2016.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) growth during extended periods of high water temperature. Mass occurrence of blue-green algae observed every summer. Rainwater overflow south of Fredensborg Harbour identified as a potential faecal pollution source.
