Falconara Nord Ex Hotel Luca is a pebble beach with calcareous origin in Falconara Marittima, Ancona, protected by artificial rocky cliffs. The beach has a length of 300 m and width of 60 m, with a gentle slope of 3% both above and below water. The distance between average low-water and high-water marks is 80 m, with astronomical tides of 30–50 cm. The surrounding area contains urban settlements, a railway line, and the riparian zone of the Esino River estuary.

Marine water body (Senigallia_Ancona). Beach dimensions: 300 m long, 60 m wide. Area: 0.36814 km². Average slope: 3% for both emerged and submerged beach. Distance between medium–low and high water: 80 m. Astronomical tidal range: 30–50 cm.

Water Quality

Category C bathing water. 2015: Poor classification; E. coli 90th percentile 358 CFU/100ml; intestinal enterococci 90th percentile 242.6 CFU/100ml. 2016: Poor classification; E. coli 90th percentile 314.8 CFU/100ml; intestinal enterococci 90th percentile 191.8 CFU/100ml. 2017: Sufficient classification; E. coli 90th percentile 453.4 CFU/100ml; intestinal enterococci 90th percentile 167.1 CFU/100ml. 2018: Sufficient classification; E. coli 90th percentile 235.0 CFU/100ml; intestinal enterococci 90th percentile 95.1 CFU/100ml. Monthly monitoring of the wastewater treatment plant in 2010 showed E. coli levels ranging from below the detection limit to 3000 CFU/100ml, with highest readings in September and December.

Risks

The area is closed to bathing and is strongly influenced by the Esino River estuary. Identified pollution sources include overflow of black water from lift station no. 4 and flooding events from the Esino River. Wastewater discharges from livestock farming and biogas facilities upstream on the Esino River in the Jesi area. Non-toxic microalgal bloom of Fibrocapsa japonica occurs in July and August. Non-stinging jellyfish (Cotylorhiza tubercolata) and stinging jellyfish (Charybdea) are present.
