Tiro al Piattello is a fine sand beach in Falconara Marittima, Ancona province, in the Marche region. The beach has quartzose feldspathic and calcareous sandy composition with an average slope of 3%. It is protected by artificial emerged rocky outcrops. The beach is 780 metres long and 35 metres wide, with the surrounding area consisting of urban settlements and a railway line passing through.

Water

Marine bathing water with average distance from water to safe water limit of 80 metres. Astronomical tide range of 30–50 centimetres. The receiving water body is the Rigatta ditch, which discharges directly into the sea.

Location

Falconara Marittima, Ancona province, Marche region. The beach extends 780 metres in length and 35 metres in width.

Water Quality

Classification: Category E. The bathing water is influenced by the mouth of the Esino River. The Vallechiara wastewater treatment plant discharges onto the Rigatta ditch approximately 1 kilometre from the coastline. Monthly controls by ARPAM during 2010 on E. coli from the treatment plant showed results compliant with authorized limits, with values ranging from below detection limit to 3000 UFC/100 ml in September 2010. The maximum authorized concentration for E. coli is 500 UFC/100 ml.

Risks

The bathing water area is subject to pollution from the Esino River mouth. A natural drainage channel and combined sewer overflow discharge via a cement pipe (80 × 60 centimetres). Two major pollution incidents occurred: a diesel fuel spill from the API Refinery on 22 June 2007, causing closure until 22 July 2007; and a second spill from a tank at the refinery on 25 July 2007, causing closure until 4 August 2007. In 2009, a massive bloom of the non-toxic alga Fibrocapsa japonica occurred in August with brownish-red discoloration and oily water consistency. A non-toxic dinoflagellate, Noctiluca scintillans, caused a bloom in June 2009 with fluorescent orange colouration.
