Femø Havn

Femø Havn is a fine sandy beach located on the west side of Femø, measuring 100 metres long and 10 metres wide. The beach is situated beside Femø Harbour with pleasant surroundings and good facilities. The water is classified as brackish in Femø Sund. The beach is marked by a blue line on the seabed and is classified as excellent quality for bathing.

Water

Brackish water in Femø Sund with changing current direction and no dominant current flow. Water depth increases rapidly from the shore, reaching approximately 2 metres at about 50 metres from the coast. The seabed is composed of fine sand with scattered small stones.

Location

Femø Havn is located on Femø's west side beside Femø Harbour along Femø Sund. The beach is accessible via Askhavnsvej or Pigmosevej, both leading to the harbour car park. Parking is available at the harbour.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as excellent quality for 2022, based on routine sampling during the 2018–2021 bathing season. Water is monitored regularly for E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria during the bathing season (1 June – 1 September). A mechanical wastewater treatment plant discharges treated water 850 metres south of the beach via a 140-metre concrete pipe, diluted to levels that do not affect beach water quality. An emergency overflow from a pumping station exists at Femø Harbour with very low risk of affecting bathing water quality.

Risks

Risk of algal bloom (cyanobacteria and phytoplankton) is low, occurring mainly during prolonged warm periods. Algae can produce toxins causing headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) washup in the water's edge. Water depth increases rapidly offshore; swimmers should not venture far from shore. Sailing channel at Femø Harbour should be avoided. Swimming south of the beach boundary is not recommended. Glass and litter can occur on the beach. Risk of chemical pollution is very low. Sudden pollution from accidents involving leisure boats, slurry tanks or sewer lines is possible.
