Coastal seawater bathing areas in the Mediterranean Sea near Nice, France.

Location

Nice, France. Bathing areas extend from La Lanterne to Coco Beach, with 26 sampling sites distributed along this coastal section. The mayor's authority over bathing safety extends 300 metres from the communal shoreline.

Season

1 June to 30 September 2024. Weekly bacteriological monitoring with an additional pre-season sampling between 10 and 20 May.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on bacteriological parameters: Escherichia coli (threshold 1000/100 ml) and intestinal enterococci (threshold 370/100 ml). Good quality water meets standards below these thresholds. Results are evaluated within 36 hours of sampling using ANSES standards under European Directive 2006/7/CE. Counter-analysis is mandatory if thresholds are exceeded, with bathing closure if pollution is confirmed.

Risks

Bacteriological pollution from direct bather contamination, sewerage and stormwater networks (structural insufficiency, accidents, overload during rain), and terrestrial inputs from watercourses. Marine pollution from hydrocarbon spills and algal blooms (Ostreopsis ovata) are also identified hazards. Temporary sewerage discharges occur during heavy rainfall.
