Water

Coastal Mediterranean sea waters adjacent to Nice. The bathing zone extends to 300 meters from the municipal shoreline.

Location

Nice, France. Bathing water sites extend from La Lanterne to Coco Beach, covering the municipal coastal area extending 300 meters from the shoreline.

Season

June 1 to September 30, 2024. Pre-season sampling occurs between May 10 and 20. Weekly bacteriological monitoring during the official bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on Escherichia coli (threshold: 1000/100 ml) and intestinal enterococci (threshold: 370/100 ml) measurements. Good quality classification applies when parameters are below established thresholds. Results are interpreted according to ANSES thresholds aligned with European Directive 2006/7/CE. Systematic counter-analysis is conducted when thresholds are exceeded, with beach closure implemented if pollution is confirmed.

Risks

Potential sources of bacteriological pollution include direct bather contamination, wastewater and stormwater network discharges, and terrestrial inputs from watercourses. Chemical pollution from pesticides, nitrates, phosphates, heavy metals, and hydrocarbons is monitored. Thermal pollution and physical pollution from suspended matter are also concerns. Emergency procedures address marine pollution from hydrocarbons and the proliferation of the algae Ostreopsis ovata.
