Flyvesandet

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Flyvesandet is a fine, broad sandy beach located on the northern coast of Funen facing the Kattegat, situated north of the Flyvesandet campground. The beach is 600 metres long and 20–25 metres wide, composed of fine sand with small to medium-sized stones scattered evenly across it, and features stone breakwaters along its length. The beach is set in calm surroundings with the beautiful Storskov forest to the east and southeast and a fine beach meadow area to the west. The water is classified as brackish water.

Water

Brackish water in the Kattegat with variable current direction. Water depth is less than 2 metres approximately 400 metres from the shore. The seabed consists of fine sand with small stones and a few medium-sized stones scattered across it.

Location

The beach is located on Funen's northern coast north of Flyvesandet campground, facing the Kattegat. Access is via Flyvesandsvej, with parking available along the entire length of the beach.

Facilities

Parking along Flyvesandsvej, rubbish bins at all parking areas, warning sign for water quality alerts, first aid kit, emergency telephone, drinking water, toilet facilities.

Season

Official monitoring season: 1 June – 1 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2016: Excellent. Classification is based on routine samples analysed for E. coli and enterococci bacteria taken during the bathing season in the period 2012–2015. The classification is reviewed annually before the start of the bathing season.

Risks

Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) washup at the waterline; bathing near large quantities of seaweed is not recommended. Risk of blue-green algae bloom is low. Risk of phytoplankton bloom is low. Glass shards and litter may occur on the beach. Risk of chemical pollution (such as oil spills) is very low. Sudden pollution from accidents involving recreational boats, slurry tanks, and sewage pipes is possible.
