Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Hasmark is a fine, broad beach on the northeast coast of Funen facing the Kattegat. The 500-metre-long, 20-metre-wide beach comprises fine sand with scattered small stones, and the seabed consists of fine sand with few small to medium-sized stones. The beach is bordered by perpendicular stone barriers (groins). The surrounding area includes a large summer house area and Hasmark Camping, with a large car park, toilet facilities, and refreshment options accessible via Strandvejen.

Water

Brackish water in the Kattegat. Water depth is less than 2 metres approximately 180 metres from the shore. Current direction is variable, primarily from the west or east. The area around the beach is shallow with water level rising gradually from the coast.

Location

Hasmark is located on the northeast coast of Funen in Denmark. The beach is accessed via Strandvejen, which leads to a large car park. Toilet facilities, a wheelchair-accessible ramp to the water's edge, a playground, tables, benches, and shower facilities are available at the eastern end of the beach.

Season

Official bathing season is 1 June to 1 September. Water quality classification is reviewed annually in May before the bathing season starts.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent for 2016, based on routine monitoring samples from the 2012–2015 bathing season. Classification is determined by concentrations of E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria. Monitoring occurs during the official bathing season (1 June – 1 September).

Risks

A stormwater outlet northwest of the designated beach area discharges into a stone structure on the beach and may contain high concentrations of faecal bacteria during rainfall. Swimming is not recommended directly in front of this outlet. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of macroalgae (large seaweed) wash-up is low. Risk of chemical contamination (e.g. oil spills) is very low. Glass shards and litter may occur on the beach. Sudden pollution from accidents involving leisure boats, manure tanks, or sewage pipes is possible.
