Foce Fiume Centa is a mixed sandy and pebbly beach located at the mouth of the Centa River in the Liguria region of Italy. The bathing area includes both free public beach and private beach establishments with food and accommodation facilities. The beach is situated in an urbanized context with railway lines and highways located upstream. The water quality classification for the 2021–2024 four-year evaluation period is Sufficient.

Water

Coastal water body at the mouth of the Centa River. Area extent: 0.254 km². The Centa River basin forms an alluvial plain with fluvial deposits, bounded to the west by the Capo Lena promontory.

Location

Located in Albenga, Province of Savona, Liguria. The beach is at the mouth of the Centa River in the Laigueglia–Albenga water body. The area is accessible via SS1 highway and railway line.

Free beach areas and private beach establishments with restaurant and catering services. Accommodation available (residences and campsites). Emergency services: European emergency number 112; Guardia Costiera Comando COMPAMARE Savona.

Monitoring programme for 2025 with intensified monitoring frequency.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Sufficient (2021–2024 four-year evaluation). Monitoring frequency is intensified for the 2025 season due to the Sufficient classification. The Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms.

Risks

The Centa River mouth discharges directly into the bathing water. The Albenga treatment plant sewage pipe is located approximately 740 metres west of the monitoring point in the Vadino area, discharging offshore at approximately 1.1 km from the shore, outside the bathing water boundaries. During heavy precipitation, increased river flow rates may transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has occurred in the region; reference station MCAD at Pietra Ligure recorded values of 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July 2021, August 2022, July 2023, and July 2024. Inhalation of Ostreopsis ovata aerosol can cause temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals.
