Regione Burrone is a small sandy and pebbly beach in Albenga, Liguria, delimited by artificial structures with some perpendicular groynes. The beach is backed by the Lungomare Doria promenade, greenhouses, and cultivated fields. The bathing water is classified as Good based on four-year monitoring data from 2019–2022. The beach is part of a series of beaches separated by artificial piers along the Ligurian coast.

Water

Coastal bathing water (Acque costiere) with an area of 0.284 km². The water body is named Laigueglia-Albenga and is fed by fluvial deposits from the Rio Burrone valley. The beach comprises sand and pebbles with artificial groynes extending perpendicular to the shore.

Location

Albenga, Savona Province, Liguria region. The beach is located along the coast near the Rio Burrone estuary, with access via the Lungomare Doria promenade. The Municipality of Albenga is at Piazza San Michele 17, 17031 Albenga SV.

Water Quality

Classification: Good (based on 2019–2022 four-year assessment). A sewage pipe is located approximately 120 m north of the monitoring point and discharges about 1.1 km offshore, outside the bathing water area. During heavy precipitation, increased flow from mountain torrents may transport sewage downstream via the Rio Burrone mouth, which discharges directly into the bathing water.

Risks

Rio Burrone estuary discharges directly into the bathing water. During heavy rainfall events, sewage transport is possible due to increased stream discharge. Microalgae blooms of Ostreopsis ovata have been recorded in the region; symptoms from aerosol inhalation are temporary and reversible respiratory irritation and occasional fever in sensitive individuals. Exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit occurred in August 2018 at the reference station in Pietra Ligure, with values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre recorded in July and August 2018, July 2021, and August 2022.
