Fossola is a bathing area located in Riomaggiore within the Cinque Terre marine protected area in Liguria, Italy. It features a coarse-grained pebble beach situated between two sections of high rocky coastline. The water body is classified as coastal waters with mountain relief and low stability. The bathing area has been classified as Excellent for the four-year period 2019–2022.

Water

Coastal waters with mountain relief and low stability, part of the Cinque Terre marine protected area. The beach is coarse-grained pebble, positioned between high rocky coastal sections. The water body is fed by the Fosso di Riomaggiore stream.

Location

Riomaggiore, La Spezia province, Liguria region. The bathing area extends 1.073 km. Access is available via local roads SP32 and SP delle Cinque Terre located inland. A ferry mooring dock is situated to the west. The nearest municipality office is at Via Telemaco Signorini 118, 19017 Riomaggiore.

Facilities

Public beach with tourist services. Animals are permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2019–2022: Excellent. A wastewater treatment plant for Riomaggiore is located approximately 150 metres to the west of the sampling station, with an offshore discharge pipe discharging approximately 1070 metres from the shore, outside the bathing water area. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae have appeared in the region over the past decade; monitoring at the reference station in Monterosso al Mare from 2019–2023 showed no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit.

Risks

During heavy rainfall events, increased stream discharge from the Fosso di Riomaggiore may transport wastewater downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae can produce temporary and reversible respiratory effects and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation. No cyanobacterial blooms are present in the Ligurian Sea due to oligotrophic conditions.
