Manarola Lo Scalo is a bathing area located on a high, rocky coastline facing the western part of the Manarola village in the Cinque Terre region. The water body is part of the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area. The bathing water is classified as Good based on the 2019–2022 four-year assessment. Tourist services and the Cinque Terre maritime tourism consortium operate in the area.

Coastal water body. Bathing area extends 0.232 km². The water is part of the Cinque Terre water body within a mountainous, rocky coastline with low stability characteristics.

Location

Water Quality

Classification: Good (2019–2022 four-year assessment period). Monitoring is conducted under the regional control network for Ostreopsis ovata. Reference station is MONT at Monterosso al Mare, where no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit were recorded between 2019 and 2023.

Risks

The Riomaggiore-Manarola wastewater treatment plant is located approximately 90 metres south of the sampling station with a sewer line discharging offshore. Port-related pollution exists from the Manarola tourist harbour. During heavy precipitation, torrent flow increases may transport effluent downstream. The Groppo Canal mouth is located at the eastern border of the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms have occurred in Liguria over the past decade; inhalation of aerosol produces temporary and reversible respiratory effects and possible fever in sensitive individuals.
