Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Fuglsang Sø is a sand beach with a sandy bottom located in Herning municipality, Denmark. The bathing water profile extends approximately 700 metres along the shore, with the beach measuring 20–30 metres wide. Water clarity is excellent, with visibility exceeding 1 metre, and algae are absent or very rare. The lake is fed by groundwater with no known pollution sources in the bathing area.

Water

Freshwater lake fed by groundwater. The bathing profile covers approximately 700 metres. Beach width is 20–30 metres. Water depth is approximately 0.5 metres at 5 metres from shore, 1 metre at 10 metres from shore, and 1.5 metres at 15 metres from shore. Water clarity exceeds 1 metre visibility depth.

Location

Fuglsang Sø, Vesterholmvej and Brændgårdvej, Herning, Denmark. Herning Kommune is the responsible authority.

Season

Routine monitoring is conducted during the bathing season. Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season starts.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent quality based on routine monitoring samples collected during the bathing season and analysed for indicator bacteria E. coli and enterococci. Classification was calculated using samples from 2013–2017 and is reviewed annually before the bathing season. No known pollution sources are present in the bathing water profile area.

Risks

The risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom is low. The risk of phytoplankton bloom is low. However, blooms can occur unexpectedly, particularly during extended warm periods with nutrient-rich water. Cyanobacteria can produce toxins causing headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Children and immunocompromised individuals are particularly vulnerable.
