Fursund Strand is a bathing beach located on the west side of Fur island in the waters between Fur Sund and Livø Bredning. The beach extends approximately 250 metres and is around 10 metres wide, consisting of mixed stone and gravel with many shells washed ashore. The area is very shallow with a sandy bottom containing larger stones. Water temperature varies between 10°C and 22°C during the bathing season. The bathing water is classified as excellent quality, the highest classification possible.

Water

Saltwater area in Fur Sund and Livø Bredning. The beach is approximately 250 metres long and 10 metres wide. The area is very shallow; at the southern end of the beach, it takes approximately 30 metres to reach 2 metres depth, while at the northern end it takes 100–120 metres to reach 2 metres depth.

Location

Located on the west side of Fur island. Access to the northern end of the beach via a side road to Hindkjærvej. Parking available along this side road. GPS reference point: Hindkjærvej 32, 7884 Fur.

Facilities

Dry toilet. Waste bins. Dogs must be leashed from 1 April to 30 September.

Season

Bathing season is from 1 April to 30 September for dog restrictions. Water temperature varies between 10°C and 22°C during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as excellent quality based on data from 2016–2019 for E. coli and enterococci. However, water quality shows instability with fluctuating bacterial concentrations, particularly after heavy rain due to wastewater discharge from rural properties. Risk of temporary fecal contamination from rural wastewater is present during heavy rainfall.

Risks

Possible temporary fecal contamination from scattered settlements, wastewater treatment plant discharge, manure spills, and boat toilet tank emptying. Risk of blooms of other microscopic algae species during bathing season. Potential washed-up seaweed and eelgrass from central Limfjorden, though risk is low due to prevailing westerly winds and beach exposure. Risk of Pacific oysters spreading in the area with sharp shells. Pollen accumulation, particularly pine pollen, in spring and early summer. Low risk of toxic cyanobacteria due to high salinity. Low risk of oxygen depletion and chemical contamination from ships.
