Østerstrand is a 500-metre sandy beach located approximately 1 kilometre from Nykøbing town centre in Morsø Municipality, Denmark. The beach features fine sand interspersed between stone jetties, with a gradually sloping seabed that transitions from stony bottom near the shore to fine sand further out. The beach is designated as a Blue Flag beach and is surrounded by attractive natural woodland areas. The beach averages 8 to 10 metres in width.

Water

The water is classified as salt water in Limfjorden. The dominant current direction is from the southwest. Water depth increases gradually from the shore, reaching 2 metres at approximately 160 to 180 metres from the coast.

Location

Østerstrand is located approximately 1 kilometre from Nykøbing town centre in Morsø Municipality, Denmark. Access is via public roads Øster Allé and Langelinie. Good parking is available along the entire length of the beach. Nearby accommodation includes Danhostel Nykøbing Mors hostel and Morsø Camping at the northern end of the beach.

Facilities

The beach is wheelchair-accessible with ramps and accessible toilets. During the bathing season, the beach is equipped with a municipal bathing bridge and floating activity raft. A beach volleyball court is located at the northern end of the beach. Tables and benches are installed along the entire beach.

Routine monitoring occurs during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring of E. coli and enterococcus bacteria during the bathing season. The classification was calculated using control samples collected regularly from 2013 to 2016. Classification is reviewed annually before the start of the bathing season. No significant sources of faecal pollution have been identified in the area.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria blooms is assessed as low but can occur, particularly during prolonged periods of warm weather and nutrient-rich water. Risk of large accumulations of seaweed (macroalgae) washing ashore is assessed as low. Sudden pollution can occur from maritime accidents, private boats, and sewer lines. Glass shards, rubbish, and chemical contamination including oil spills may occur.
