Fynshav Badestrand

Fynshav Badestrand is a sandy beach approximately 750 metres long located at Fynshav harbour on the Little Belt (Lillebælt). The northern section features sand with scattered seaweed and shallow water suitable for children, reaching 0.5 metres depth at about 30 metres from shore. The southern end has a stony base with rapid depth increase and dense macroalgae coverage. The beach is characterized by significant wash-up of eelgrass, seaweed, and other macroalgae species.

Water

Marine brackish water body (Little Belt/Lillebælt) with salinity of 16–24 ‰. The northern section has sand bottom with scattered seaweed and very shallow water. The southern section has a 2–3 metre stony base followed by sand with dense macroalgae coverage. Currents typically flow westward or northward, with direction generally following the coastline.

Location

Located at Fynshav harbour on Lillebælt (Little Belt). Access via parking at the harbour, from a path starting at Nedergade, or from Lillebælt Camping. Shopping facilities available 700 metres away in Fynshav town. A boat launch ramp is available at the camping site.

1 June to 15 September

Water Quality

Water classification: Excellent. Sampling occurs from 1 June to 15 September, analysing for E. coli and intestinal enterococci. No exceedances of faecal coliform limits recorded over the last four years. The town has separate sewage systems with some overflow structures; scattered residences use septic tanks or direct discharge to streams. Primary risk sources are rainwater-related outflows from potential errors in separate systems and contamination via streams from agricultural runoff or individual household discharge.

Risks

Large volumes of wash-up macroalgae (seaweed and eelgrass), particularly south of the harbour structure. Decomposing seaweed can produce toxins and harbour disease-causing bacteria. Very low risk of cyanobacteria/blue-green algae blooms in this region; no such blooms have been observed. No previous phytoplankton blooms recorded during the bathing season.
