Gåbense is a bathing beach located on Nordfalster extending into Storstrømmen. The beach runs approximately 250 metres along a mole, with a sandy beach at its eastern end and sand bottom throughout. Water depth is under 2 metres for approximately the first 150 metres from the shore. The beach is classified as excellent water quality based on data from 2011–2014.

Water

Brackish water in Storstrømmen. Beach length approximately 250 metres. Water depth under 2 metres for the first approximately 150 metres from shore. Sand bottom. Water temperature during bathing season 13–25 °C. Water currents predominantly flow east to northeast (27% of measurements) and east (23% of measurements).

Location

Nordfalster on Guldborgsund Kommune. Access via Gåbense Strandvej. No public transport available. Parking available on the road leading to the harbour.

Toilet. Bathing pier.

Season

Official monitoring season 1 May to 1 September. Minimum 6 water samples taken per season.

Water Quality

Water classified as excellent quality according to Danish regulation no. 939 of 18 September 2012, based on data from 2011–2014. Very few exceedances of bathing water quality requirements recorded during the monitoring period. Fecal contamination is not considered a significant concern.

Risks

Risk of blue-green algal blooms (cyanobacteria), especially during prolonged warm, sunny weather and east winds. Algae produce toxins causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea. Macro-algae (seaweed) accumulation at the shoreline is possible; bathing is discouraged near accumulated seaweed. Sudden contamination may occur from accidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks and sewer pipes. Glass shards, litter, oil spills and other chemical pollution can occasionally occur. Phytoplankton risk generally low; diatoms and dinoflagellates can accumulate in shellfish.
