Kastaniegården

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Kastaniegården is a 200-metre-long beach with sand and small to medium-sized stones near the waterline, located on Storstrømmen with views towards Farøbroen. The beach is 10-15 metres wide and bordered by stone breakwaters. The water is classified as brackish and the bathing water quality is rated as excellent, with fecal bacteria concentrations very low. The beach is situated in attractive surroundings with extensive green space and is accessible by road via Mælkeurtevej.

Water

Storstrømmen, a brackish water body. Water depth increases rapidly from the shore, with depths under 2 metres extending 40-60 metres from the coast. Current direction is variable, primarily from the west or east. The seabed is primarily covered with medium-sized stones.

Location

The beach is located at Bakkebølle Strand near Farøbroen in Vordingborg Kommune, Denmark. Access is via Mælkeurtevej. The responsible authority is Vordingborg Kommune, Valdemarsgade 43, 4760 Vordingborg.

1 June – 1 September

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: Excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring of indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) during the bathing season (1 June – 1 September). The classification meets required values and was calculated from samples taken regularly during 2007-2010. The classification is revised annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

Two stormwater outfalls are located 140 metres northwest and 250 metres southeast of the beach, with potential for high fecal bacteria concentrations during rain. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms. Seaweed (macroalgae) can be washed ashore and should be avoided for swimming as it can harbour pathogenic bacteria and produce toxins. Glass fragments and litter can occur. Risk of chemical pollution such as oil spills is very low. Swimmers should be aware that water depth increases rapidly and should not swim directly opposite the stormwater outfalls.
