Gals Klint

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Gals Klint is a 350-metre beach located on the Hindsgavl Peninsula near Middelfart, consisting primarily of beach meadow with a very narrow sand strip (less than 1 metre). The beach is surrounded by relatively hilly forest that extends nearly to the water's edge and is used primarily as a boat launch site and for fishing rather than as a bathing beach. Washed-up eelgrass is present along most of the stretch. The seabed becomes relatively deep quickly and is stony with macroalgae and eelgrass with epiphytes.

Water

Part of the Little Belt (Lillebælt) in the northern section called Snævringen. Brackish water with approximately 20 PSU (Practical Salinity Unit). The seabed is stony with macroalgae and eelgrass. Depth increases relatively quickly from the shore.

Location

Located a couple of kilometres west of Middelfart city centre on the Hindsgavl Peninsula. Access is via Galsklintvej or gravel paths through the surrounding forest. Parking is available at the end of Galsklintvej.

Facilities

One rescue ring. Three toilets in a camping facility building with beach-side access. Parking at the end of Galsklintvej. Several tables, benches, and waste bins in the public beach meadow area.

Season

Monitoring occurs with at least six water samples taken during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Classified as EXCELLENT based on enterococci and E. coli measurements over the previous four years according to EU bathing water directive rules. No exceedances of microbiological parameter limit values have been recorded. No known pollution sources identified.

Risks

Extremely strong and unpredictable currents can occur, flowing in easterly or westerly directions or outward, depending on tidal and wind conditions. Currents can flow in westerly, northerly, and north-easterly directions. Washed-up eelgrass is present. Dead marine animals have previously affected bathing water quality.
