Skærbæk Strandpark

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Skærbæk Strandpark is a 300–400 metre sandy beach located in Skærbæk, facing southwest toward Kolding Fjord. The primary swimming area is a 10–15 metre wide sand beach with a grass recreation area for bathers. The beach is designated as a Blue Flag beach and has been classified as excellent water quality, the highest bathing water classification possible.

Water

Marine water body in Kolding Fjord. Water depth ranges from 0.5–1.5 metres near the shore, extending to over 2 metres at 50 metres from the coast. Sand bottom. Salinity approximately 22–23 ‰. Current direction is highly variable and influenced by wind direction, with no primary current direction.

Location

Located in Skærbæk, southwest-facing toward Kolding Fjord. Access via Brandsøvej. A small car park is available.

Facilities

Toilets, bathing pier, tables and benches. Blue Flag beach designation. Dogs prohibited on the beach from 1 June to 15 September; dogs must be leashed from 1 April to 30 September.

1 June to 15 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent. Bathing water analysed 10 times during the bathing season with results published at the beach and on the municipality website. Risk of faecal contamination assessed as low. A combined sewer overflow structure exists near Skærbæk harbour immediately west of the beach; during heavy rain, overflow to Lillebælt is possible. The municipality's wastewater plan focuses on limiting the number of overflows.

Risks

Risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is generally small but can occur during summer periods with prolonged heat. Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) accumulation at the shoreline is small in summer. Weever fish present in shallow water during summer months; stepping on a weever fish can cause painful injuries from venomous spines. Risk of jellyfish in northern Lillebælt during summer, particularly July and August. Broken glass, litter, and discarded objects may occur at the beach. Chemical contamination including oil spills is possible.
