Nieder Mooser See

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Nieder-Mooser-See is a 30.6-hectare pond located in the Vogelsberg region at 448 meters elevation, between the villages of Nieder-Moos and Ober-Moos in the municipality of Freiensteinau. Originally created in the 16th century for fish farming by the Freiherren zu Riedesel, the lake is fed by the Moosbach from the upstream Ober-Mooser-See and two small streams from nearby springs. The water is characterized by a low average depth of 1.52 meters and a maximum depth of 2.8 meters, which causes strong warming in summer and nutrient release from bottom sediments. The lake is part of the Vogelsberger Seenplatte, an ornithologically significant area where silver herons and occasionally fish eagles can be observed.
