Holten Strand

Holten Strand is a pebble beach with some sand located on Lambo Farvandet in South Lolland, approximately 5 kilometres from Nysted. The beach is approximately 200 metres long and very narrow, with shallow water reaching a depth of around 1 metre for the first 400 metres from the shore. The bathing water is classified as excellent according to Danish regulations, based on monitoring data from 2011–2014. The water temperature during the bathing season ranges from 13 to 25 °C.

Water

Brackish water classified as brakvand. The beach is approximately 200 metres long and very narrow with a pebble and sand composition and sand bottom. Water depth is around 1 metre for the first 400 metres from the shore. Water currents vary but predominantly flow towards east-southeast and northwest (each 22% of measurements) and east (17% of measurements).

Location

The beach is accessed via Holtevej in Guldborgsund Municipality, where a car park is located at the end of the road. No public transport serves the beach. The nearest town is Nysted, approximately 5 kilometres away.

Facilities

Toilet, green area with tables and benches, natural camping area.

Season

Monitoring and bathing season runs from 1 May to 1 September, with a minimum of 6 water quality samples taken during this period.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as excellent according to Bekendtgørelse nr. 939 of 18/09/2012, based on data from 2011–2014. Minor short-term faecal contamination has been observed at the monitoring station, though no known pollution sources exist in the bathing area. Sudden contamination can occur from incidents involving pleasure boats, manure tanks, and sewage pipes.

Risks

Minor short-term faecal contamination can occur with unknown causes. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms may develop, particularly during prolonged warm and sunny weather with winds from easterly directions, causing symptoms such as headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation can occur at the shoreline. Glass, debris, oil spills, and other chemical pollution can occasionally occur.
