Gerå Strand

Gerå Strand is a 150-meter-long beach located 2 kilometers east of Gerå and 5 kilometers south of Aså in the Aså-Gerå Wildlife Reserve. The beach consists of fine sand with few small stones, and the seabed comprises fine sand. The beach is 5 to 15 meters wide and is situated on the coast of Kattegat, which is classified as saltwater.

Water

Saltwater body in Kattegat. Water depth is under 2 meters up to 350 meters from the shore. Current direction is variable, primarily from the south, north, or east based on 48 measurements between 2006 and 2010.

Location

The beach is located 2 kilometers east of Gerå and 5 kilometers south of Aså in Aså-Gerå Wildlife Reserve. Access is provided via Strandgårdsvej from Gerå. A parking area is located at the end of Strandgårdsvej, with a 350-meter walking path through the nature reserve to reach the beach. Benches and information boards about wildlife are available at the parking area.

Parking area, benches, information boards, waste bins. Dogs must be kept on a leash. Warning signs are available to alert swimmers to reduced water quality.

Season

Routine monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Water quality classification is revised annually in May before the bathing season begins.

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: Good. Classification is based on routine monitoring for indicator bacteria E. coli and enterokokker during the bathing season. The classification was calculated from samples collected regularly between 2015 and 2018 and is revised annually before the bathing season begins. The water meets the required quality standards.

Risks

Risk from Gerå stream 700 meters north of the beach, which can contain high concentrations of fecal bacteria during rainfall when water washes fecal matter from roofs and roads into the stream. Drainage ditches along Strandgårdsvej and north and south of the beach may contain high concentrations of fecal bacteria in certain periods. Large flocks of birds wash in freshwater from Geråen and may leave fecal matter on exposed mudflats that enters the bathing water during high tide. Risk of sudden contamination from boat spills, manure tanks, and sewage pipes. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large seaweed (macroalgae) washup.
