Hou Havnebad

Hou Havnebad is a bathing area located in the outer part of Hou Harbour in Nørresundby. The beach features a bathing platform with a ladder and crane, accessible to wheelchair users. Water depth at the bathing platform is approximately 1 metre, with sand and occasional stones on the bottom. The bathing area is enclosed by fencing to separate it from the harbour boats.

Location

Hou Harbour, Stigsborg Brygge 5, 9400 Nørresundby, Denmark. The bathing area is accessible via a bathing platform established at the harbour with a crane and ladder for entry.

Facilities

Bathing platform with wheelchair-accessible entry via established crane. Life jackets available. Waste bin and toilet facilities adjacent to the pleasure boat harbour.

Bathing water samples are taken during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Not classified, as the monitoring station was newly established or re-established. Water samples are analysed during the bathing season for two indicator bacteria: E. coli and intestinal enterococci. The last 4 years of bacterial concentration data is used for classification calculations. Possible faecal pollution sources include Hou Pleasure Boat Harbour.

Risks

Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) in the shoreline; bathing near large accumulations is not recommended. Risk of cyanobacteria blooms in Kattegat, which can cause skin irritation and rash, or poisoning if large amounts of contaminated water are ingested. Phytoplankton growth in Kattegat is assessed as low. Short-term pollution can occur following heavy rainfall. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally be present.
