Glyki Nero is a wide sandy beach located in a natural bay in Ayia Napa, Cyprus. The beach is 130 metres long with an average water depth of 0.8 metres and a maximum depth of 2.5 metres. Vegetation on the beach consists mainly of ornamental plants from adjacent hotels and palm trees, with large hotel complexes and dining facilities situated on elevated ground above the shoreline. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag status and can accommodate a maximum of 1800 daily swimmers.

Water

Coastal Mediterranean water body, part of water body CY_24-C3 in Ayia Napa. The beach has a natural sandy coastline with a rocky substrate. Average water depth is 0.8 metres, maximum depth is 2.5 metres.

Location

Ayia Napa, Famagusta Province, Cyprus. The monitoring point is located at the centre of the beach where bathers typically concentrate under normal conditions (coordinates 34.0117°E, 34.9839°N, ETRS89).

Facilities

Blue Flag designated beach. Public toilets available. Umbrellas and sun beds for rent. Waste collection bins. Lifeguards with rescue equipment on duty from 10:00 to 18:00. Water sports services (jet ski and similar activities) available in the western section of the beach. Beach cleaning is managed by Ayia Napa Municipality.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data. Monitoring results from 2004–2007 at nearby station CY_4_M614_7 showed nitrate concentrations and chlorophyll-a levels below 2 mg/l and 2 μg/l respectively. Nitrate concentrations showed a stabilizing trend. The coastal water body is in good ecological status.

Risks

Occasional temporary macroalgae (Cladophora spp) documented in 2008 in the adjacent fishing shelter area. Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development based on morphology and recorded occurrences. Passing recreational vessels and water sports activities are potential pollution sources. One short-term pollution incident recorded between 2008 and 2010 (16 August 2010), attributed to a passing ship. Small risk of short-term pollution occurrence with frequency estimated at once per swimming season, lasting 1–2 days.
