Gniben is a sandy beach approximately 360 meters long and 20 meters wide located on Sejerø in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. The beach features fine sand with few stones, and the seabed extends with sand nearshore and larger stones further out. The beach is backed by cliffs and dunes with scattered houses and a summer cottage area inland. The water current flows predominantly westward.

Water

Sandy beach and sea. The beach is approximately 360 meters long and 20 meters wide. The seabed consists of sand nearshore with larger stones further out.

Location

Gniben, Sejerø, Kalundborg Municipality. A road runs approximately 20 meters from the beach and ends at a parking area at the northern end. Parking is available along the road with access to the beach.

Season

Monitoring conducted minimum 4 times per year. Classification section reviewed annually in November following the bathing season.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent. Based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2018–2021, the beach meets the highest water quality standard under EU bathing water directive criteria.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and macroalgae (seaweed) pose potential health risks. Algae can produce toxic substances causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea. Large accumulations of seaweed at the water's edge are discouraged for bathing as they can harbour bacteria and extend survival of faecal bacteria. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution may occasionally occur.
