Gyrstinge Sø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Gyrstinge Sø is a freshwater lake with an excellent water quality classification. The bathing area is located at the water intake in the northeastern end of the lake, featuring a stony beach approximately 100 metres wide with a narrow grassy area before the forest. The lake has a natural bottom with firm substrate and stones, with depths under 1 metre in the first 10 metres from shore, increasing to 5–6 metres at the intake.

Water

Freshwater lake with a weak easterly flow into Ringsted Stream. Water depth under 1 metre for the first 10 metres from shore, 1–2 metres for the next 10 metres, then rising rapidly to 5–6 metres at the water intake. Beach width approximately 100 metres with an area of about 200 m².

Location

The bathing area is at the water intake near Øvej 14C, close to the village of Allindemagla in Ringsted Municipality. Parking is available at Øvej 14C, with approximately 700 metres walking distance to the bathing area. An information board is located at the parking area.

Season

Bathing water quality is monitored and classified annually by May.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Based on data from the first two bathing seasons (2018 onwards), the 95th percentile for intestinal enterococci is 106 cfu/100 ml and for Escherichia coli is 112 cfu/100 ml. No registered sources of faecal pollution with dominant influence on water quality.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is very low at the beginning of the bathing season but increases through summer, with blooms occurring most years by August. Prolonged warm and calm weather can trigger blooms. Certain algae can produce toxic substances causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea upon contact. Animals can die from high algal concentrations. Glass shards and other litter can occasionally occur at the beach.
