Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Li. Haraldsted Sø is an artificial sandy beach located outside Ringsted in Denmark. The beach is approximately 25 meters wide with fine sand covering an area of about 100 square meters. The water body has a natural lake bottom with depths gradually increasing from less than 1 meter in the first 30 meters to between 2 and 5 meters further out. Water circulation is generally very minimal, with dominant current directions from the west and south.

Water

Freshwater lake. Beach is approximately 25 meters wide with an area of approximately 100 square meters of sand. Water depth is less than 1 meter for the first 30 meters, 1–2 meters for the next 30 meters, then gradually increases to 2–5 meters. The lake has a natural bottom.

Location

Located outside Ringsted city near Holbækvej. There is an exit from Holbækvej to a parking area, with public access to the beach approximately 65 meters from the parking lot.

Facilities

Information board where Ringsted Municipality announces water quality warnings. The board displays Blue Flag criteria information and overview maps of the beach. General waste collection and separate glass waste container with regular emptying at least weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Based on data from 2010–2013, the 95th percentile for intestinal enterococci is 46 cfu/100 mL and for Escherichia coli is 77 cfu/100 mL, both well below the excellent quality thresholds of 200 and 500 respectively. No registered sources of faecal pollution with dominant influence on water quality. Heavy rainfall can cause minor temporary increases in faecal bacteria near the Ringsted Å outlet, approximately 400 meters east of the bathing station, but values remain significantly below permitted limits.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is very low at the beginning of the bathing season but increases through the season until August, when blooms typically occur several days per year. Blooms occur especially during prolonged periods of warmth and elevated nutrients and may cause headaches, skin irritations, fever, nausea, and diarrhea upon contact or ingestion. Children and immunocompromised individuals are particularly vulnerable. Glass shards and other waste may occasionally occur. No risk of macroalgae washing ashore in the lake.
