Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Parnas is a bathing spot on the western shore of Sorø lake in Denmark, consisting of a bathing pier extending into the lake and a small sandy beach. The water depth increases gradually from the shore to approximately 1 meter at the pier. The bathing water is classified as excellent quality based on data from 2016–2019.

Water

Freshwater lake. Water depth at the bathing pier is approximately 1 meter, increasing gradually from the shore. The lake bottom is sandy. Water flows northward toward Pedersborg lake.

Location

Located on the western shore of Sorø lake, slightly north of Bøgholm. Parking is available at Parnas car park, accessed via Parnasvej 21, with a path leading down to the bathing area.

Monitoring conducted 10 times from May to September.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality based on 2016–2019 data. Only isolated cases of faecal contamination recorded, more than 4 years ago. Potential pollution sources include sewage overflow structures 1.4 km, 1.6 km, and 1.7 km from the bathing area. Water circulation is rapid and the lake is relatively large, limiting pollution impact from bathers. No significant pollution from grazing animals or manure spreading.

Risks

Algal blooms occur rarely but may form during periods of heavy rainfall followed by warm weather, visible as unclear discoloured water and foam. Cyanobacteria form green paint-like mats. Macro algae called 'goat balls' form from wind and water movement but pose no risk to swimmers. Swimmer's itch risk is low, greatest during periods of strong sunshine. Sewage overflow can occur during heavy rain from overflow structures, causing temporary contamination lasting 2–3 days maximum. Glass shards and litter may occasionally be present on the beach.
