Skjolden is a bathing area at Sorø Sø, a freshwater lake in Denmark. The beach features a 35-meter-long, 8-meter-wide sandy beach and a horseshoe-shaped bathing pier measuring 75 meters in length. Water depth increases gradually from the shore to approximately 1 meter at the pier. The shallow wading area is particularly suitable for children. Water quality has been classified as excellent based on data from 2016-2019.

Water

Sorø Sø is a freshwater lake. The water body flows northward toward Pedersborg Sø. The lake bottom is sandy. Water depth at the bathing area ranges from shallow to 1-1.5 meters at the pier. Visibility depth is measured regularly.

Location

Located in Sorø town at Slagelsevej. A 180-meter walking path connects the beach to Slagelsevej. Parking is available north of the beach on the opposite side of Slagelsevej. A recreational area with a path along the lake is situated south of the bathing area.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2016-2019. Water samples are collected 10 times between May and September. Only isolated cases of fecal pollution were recorded more than 4 years ago. Sewage overflow from the municipal wastewater treatment overflow well located 600 meters south of the bathing area is the primary identified pollution source.

Risks

Algal blooms can occur and are most likely following heavy rainfall followed by warm periods. Visibility is monitored as an indicator of algae levels. Swimmer's itch risk is assessed as low, primarily during periods of intense sunshine. Macro algae including rare goat balls form from wind and water movement but do not pose a risk to swimmers. Glass shards and litter can occasionally be found. Brief pollution events lasting up to 3 days can result from sewage overflow, occurring approximately 20 times annually depending on rainfall.
