Hallstättersee, Kesselgraben

Austria Lake 1 - Excellent

Hallstättersee is a large alpine lake in Upper Austria with an area of 8.5 square kilometres, embedded fjord-like between the steep slopes of the Dachstein massif in the south and gradually flattening towards the north. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 125 metres. Despite strong water circulation from the Traun river limiting warming even in summer, the lake experiences active recreational bathing. Water clarity is generally good due to low nutrient levels, though mineral turbidity may temporarily reduce visibility after storms.
