Hallstättersee is an 8.5 square kilometre lake embedded fjord-like in the south between steep slopes of the Dachstein massif, becoming shallower towards the north. The lake reaches depths of up to 125 metres. Strong flow from the Traun river prevents significant warming even in summer, though swimming activity remains frequent. Water clarity is generally good due to low nutrient levels, though visibility can be temporarily reduced by mineral turbidity after storms.
