Hallstättersee, Untersee is a fjord-like lake in the south, embedded between steep slopes of the Dachstein massif, becoming shallower towards the north. The lake covers 8.5 square kilometres and reaches depths of up to 125 metres. Strong flow from the Traun River limits summer warming, yet the lake experiences active swimming use. Water clarity is generally good due to low nutrient levels, though mineral turbidity can reduce visibility temporarily after storms.
