Handbjerg Marina

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Handbjerg Marina is a 250-metre sandy bathing beach located on the eastern side of the marina, accessible by a bridge from the parking area. The beach is situated in a naturally beautiful area with few stones but potentially many razor clams, making bathing shoes advisable. The beach width varies significantly with tidal changes. The water is classified as brackish and very shallow near the shore, with depth increasing gradually.

Brackish water body in Limfjorden. Very shallow with gradual depth increase from shore. Water depth changes significantly with tidal movement. Current direction is variable.

Location

Located north of Handbjerg at Handbjerg Marina on Limfjorden. Accessible from a large parking area with nearby restaurant, ice café, and playground. Facilities include outdoor showers, toilets, and a shelter area with bonfire site.

Parking area, restaurant, ice café, playground, toilet facilities, outdoor showers, shelter area with bonfire site, first aid kit and defibrillator, rubbish bins, waste sorting, drinking water, life ring, paved paths suitable for mobility-impaired visitors (not to water's edge), tables and benches at various locations.

Season

Routine monitoring is conducted during the bathing season. Water quality classification is reviewed annually in May.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Monitoring is conducted routinely during the bathing season using indicator bacteria E. coli and Enterococci. Sources of faecal pollution are rainfall-related discharges from watercourses during heavy rain, including overflow structures at Engvej, discharge/overflow from Vinderup treatment plant, and overflow from pumping station at Ejsingholm summer house area. Swimming is not recommended for 3 days after heavy rain.

Risks

Razor clams on beach. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of macroalgae washing ashore in large quantities. Potential for glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills. Bathing prohibited on west side of mole due to life-threatening conditions related to marina entrance.
