Østre Strand

Gimsing Strand is a 500-metre-long beach located centrally on Venø Bay east of Struer in Denmark. The beach comprises fine sand with scattered small stones and is 10 metres wide. Stone breakwaters run perpendicular to the shore. Water depth increases gradually, reaching 2 metres at approximately 220 metres from the coast.

Water

Saltwater fjord (Limfjorden). Water depth under 2 metres extends 220 metres from the coast. Fjord bottom covered with small to medium-sized stones. Current direction is variable with no primary direction.

Location

Located east of Struer, Denmark on Venø Bay. Access is via Nørgårdvej which leads to the beach car park. Parking is available at the beach.

Facilities

Toilet facilities at the car park. Warning sign system for reduced water quality. Parking available. No lifeguards mentioned.

Season

Monitoring conducted during the bathing season. Classification revised annually in May before the season begins.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Good, meeting standard requirements. Classification based on routine monitoring for E. coli and enterococci bacteria from 2011–2014. Monitoring conducted regularly throughout the bathing season.

Risks

Two large stormwater pipe outlets south of the bathing area pose contamination risk during rainfall when faecal bacteria concentration increases. Low risk of harmful algal bloom (cyanobacteria). Low risk of phytoplankton bloom. Low risk of macroalgae accumulation. Possible pollution from boat accidents, slurry tanks, and sewage lines. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occur.
