Langø Strand is an 850-meter-long beach located on the northwestern side of the Hindsholm peninsula in Denmark. The beach consists of fine sand covered with medium-sized stones, with a stone fence at the upper part. The seabed extends approximately 15 meters wide and comprises fine sand covered with medium and large stones of varying intensity. The area is characterized by unique landscape, rich animal and bird life, and is an important breeding ground for birds in the northern part of the peninsula.

Water

Saltwater body in the Great Belt (Storebælt). The water depth is approximately 2 meters at 50 meters from the coast. The beach is 850 meters long and approximately 15 meters wide. Current direction is variable, primarily from the west and southwest.

Location

Langø Strand is situated on the Hindsholm peninsula west of a major summer house area. The beach is bordered by a grass area that separates it from the summer houses. Kerteminde Kommune is the responsible authority.

Season

Monitoring occurs during the official bathing season. The beach classification is updated annually before the bathing season begins.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as EXCELLENT. Classification is based on routine monitoring of two faecal indicator bacteria: E. coli and enterococci. The classification is updated annually before the swimming season based on samples from the four preceding swimming seasons.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation in the water edge is low. No known sources of faecal bacteria pollution have been identified. Sudden pollution can occur from ship accidents, manure tanks, or sewage pipes. Waste, glass shards, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. Accumulated seaweed should be avoided as it can promote bacterial growth and contain toxins.
