Havnemarken is a sandy beach approximately 200 metres long and 10 metres wide, located in Kalundborg Kommune, Denmark. The beach is completely covered with seagrass and macroalgae. The seabed consists mainly of sand with smaller stones and occasional larger rocks. The beach has been classified as Excellent based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2019-2022. The water current flows mainly in a southerly direction.

Location

Havnemarken is located in Kalundborg Kommune, Denmark. Access to the beach is via a single access road that ends in a parking area, approximately 10 metres from the beach. The hinterland and upland area consist of forest with forestry operations and cultivated fields.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent, based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2019-2022. A watercourse located south of the beach is identified as a source of faecal pollution, but the dominant southerly current direction diverts water away from the bathing area, resulting in low risk.

Risks

Watercourse discharge south of the beach poses minor risk due to dominant current direction. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms exists, with potential health effects including headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea in humans and potentially fatal effects in animals. Large quantities of macroalgae at the beach edge can support bacterial growth and extend survival of faecal bacteria. Glass shards, waste, and chemical pollution occasionally occur. Short-term pollution can result from heavy rainfall causing drain and watercourse overflow, typically lasting a maximum of 3 days after rainfall stops.
