Hedensted Søerne is a collection of freshwater lakes formed in a former gravel pit located west of Hedensted town. The area comprises seven larger and smaller lakes and has been designated as a recreational zone with walking and cycling paths around the lakes. A designated bathing area is established in one of the largest northern lakes, with a gently sloping bottom suitable for children up to approximately 2 metres depth.

Water

Freshwater lakes with no inlets or outlets. Water flow depends on wind direction. The lake bottom slopes gradually for the first few metres from the shore, then becomes more uneven due to the gravel pit origin. Depth increases rapidly in places and can rise suddenly. Thermocline layers can form in deeper areas, creating large temperature variations. Summer water temperature ranges from 14 to 23 degrees Celsius. The bathing area has a sandy bottom.

Location

West of Hedensted town, on the outskirts of the city within walking or cycling distance from residential areas. Parking areas are available near the bathing site. The site is located at coordinates UTM 542226, 6181933 (EUREF89, zone 32).

Parking area, information board, toilet, waste bins, bonfire hut and shelters, tables and benches.

Season

Monitoring occurs throughout the bathing season. 2024 is the first measurement season.

Water Quality

Hedensted Søerne has not yet been classified as 2024 is the first monitoring season. Water quality is monitored throughout the bathing season by the municipality. Results are published on the municipal website.

Risks

Rapid depth increase and sudden temperature drops in deeper areas can cause cramp even in experienced swimmers. Thermocline layers create temperature differences that pose risks. Algal blooms are possible when sunlight, nutrients and heat are abundant, particularly during calm wind periods and in shallow areas or areas with thermocline layers. Large algae occurrences will be reported during routine water quality monitoring.
