Helligsø Drag

Helligsø Drag is a bathing beach located at a summer house area on Nissum Bredning, south of Hurup in Thisted Municipality. The beach is a stone beach approximately 20 metres wide and more than 300 metres long, divided by coastal protection structures. The water is shallow at the edge, reaching 2 metres depth approximately 100 metres from the waterline. The bathing water is classified as excellent, representing the highest water quality category.

Water

Nissum Bredning (a fjord). Salinity 29–32 psu. Water depth reaches 2 metres approximately 100 metres from the waterline. Summer water temperature ranges from 9–21 degrees Celsius (May to August). Local rip currents and offshore currents are dependent on wind conditions and tidal conditions.

Location

Located south of Hurup in Thisted Municipality. Access via Helligsøvej or Solsortevej from Oddesundvej. The bathing site is found at Solsortevej. No parking spaces are available nearby. Nearest address: Solsortevej 54, 7760 Hurup.

Facilities

Lifeguard station (Redningspost), petanque court, tables and benches.

Monitoring occurs throughout the bathing season. Water temperature suitable for swimming typically from May to August.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as excellent, the highest quality category. Classification is based on data from the last 4 years of bathing water analyses. Water quality is monitored throughout the bathing season. No risk from point source pollution including sewage overflows, treatment plant failures, or maritime waste disposal.

Risks

Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up during strong winds and onshore winds, which can cause aesthetic problems and decomposition leading to oxygen depletion. No observed risk of algal blooms or cyanobacteria blooms in the area, though these are theoretically possible under warm, windless, and sunny conditions from April to October.
