Thyborøn Kanal

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Thyborøn Kanal is a 370-meter-long sandy beach with fine sand and no stones. The beach is 30 to 100 meters wide and faces the Thyborøn Canal on the northern side of Thyborøn. The beach is separated from the town by a dike, creating a pleasant atmosphere. Water depth increases rapidly offshore due to tidal variations and changing current and weather conditions.

Saltwater body (Vesterhavet/North Sea). Water depth increases rapidly offshore. Current direction is primarily from west or east, with variable conditions due to tide, current, and weather changes.

Location

Thyborøn, northern side of Thyborøn Canal. Multiple parking options and access points are available near the beach.

Facilities

Parking available, toilet facilities with drinking water, disabled access, blue flag, rescue ring, waste bins, warning signage for reduced water quality, and monitoring checkpoint.

Season

Routine water quality monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Water quality classification is revised annually in May before the bathing season begins.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent quality as of 2023, based on monitoring samples from 2020–2023. Water quality meets required values. E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria are monitored regularly during the bathing season. No fecal pollution sources have been identified in the area.

Risks

Risk of rip currents (revlehuller) due to rapid offshore depth increase and variable water conditions. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation. Glass shards, debris, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur. Sudden pollution from boat accidents, slurry tanks, or sewage lines is possible.
