Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Gjellerodde strand is a fine sand beach located on Lem Vig in a natural, quiet area east of a large summer house area. The beach is 10 meters wide and 250 meters long, with a fine sandy seabed containing scattered small to medium-sized stones. The beach is marked with a blue line and is situated in a scenic setting with Gjeller Odde to the north.

Water

The water body is Limfjorden, classified as saltwater. Water depth increases gradually offshore, remaining under 2 meters for approximately 250 meters from the shore. Current direction is changeable, primarily from northwest and southwest.

Location

The beach is located on Lem Vig east of the Gjellerodde summer house area. Access is via Porsevej, which leads to a large parking area. Toilet facilities are available at the parking area.

Season

Routine monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Beach classification is revised annually before the start of the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring for indicator bacteria (E. coli and Enterococci) during the bathing season. The 2023 classification meets all required values and is calculated from samples taken regularly between 2020 and 2023. The 2022 classification was also Excellent.

Risks

A stream to the north of the beach may contain high concentrations of faecal bacteria at certain times, and swimming is discouraged in its discharge area. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom is low. Risk of phytoplankton bloom is low. Risk of large accumulation of macroalgae is low. Glass shards, debris, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur. Sudden pollution may arise from incidents involving pleasure boats, manure tanks, and sewage lines.
